According to Ayurveda, coughs are mainly caused by excessive Pitta or Kapha in the bronchial tree, resulting in the congestion of the bronchial mucous membrane. Reducing the excess pitta or kapha is the recommended solution to effectively manage this condition. There are basically two kinds of cough: Dry cough and Productive cough. While Dry cough may happen due to inflammation of the trachea or irritation in the throat, a productive cough is caused due to the presence of mucus or other fluid in the respiratory tract and is generally a symptom of respiratory diseases such as Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, or Tuberculosis.
